Dedicated expert, partner network or support desk: SOC 2 service models compared

SOC 2 vendors provide human help in three ways: a dedicated expert from the vendor, access to a network of partner firms, or a support desk. On the vendors' own pages, Scytale describes a dedicated expert, Vanta and Drata describe partner networks, Sprinto lists 24x5 support, and Thoropass offers in-house auditor support.

What is the dedicated expert model?
A named person from the vendor works with you through readiness. Scytale's pages describe a dedicated compliance expert who manages the entire audit-readiness process, holds weekly meetings with you and takes over management of the audit process with your chosen auditor. Its Build DFY and Build Stronger bundles add consulting packages (LaunchReady and StayReady). This model suits teams with no compliance lead, because someone outside the team keeps the plan moving.

What is the partner network model?
The vendor provides the platform and introduces you to partner firms for advice or audits. Vanta's Essentials plan lists access to expert partners, and its service provider program includes vCISOs, MSPs and MSSPs. Drata states 1300+ partners, including auditors, and vCISO partners who provide security leadership. Secureframe includes access to its Audit Partner Network. The upside is choice; the cost is that you manage another relationship and, in many cases, another contract.

What is the support desk model?
The vendor answers questions but does not run the program with you. Sprinto's Foundation plan lists 24x5 standard email and in-app support. That can be enough for a team with an engineer or security lead who will own the work.

Where does an in-house auditor fit?
Thoropass is different again: it describes itself as auditor-led, with in-house auditor support and an audit offering led by an audit partner. The same company provides the automation and the audit. Buyers who choose this model should ask how the audit team is kept separate from the software team.

How do you tell which model you are buying?
Ask four questions in the demo: who is my named contact after signing; how often do we meet; who writes or reviews our policies; and who talks to the auditor. The answers map to one of the models above. Our expert guidance criterion scores what each vendor describes publicly.
How do the models affect cost?
No vendor on our ledger publishes the price of its services separately, so this is a question for the demo. With a dedicated expert, the service is often inside a bundle: Scytale's Build DFY and Build Stronger bundles name their consulting packages. With a partner network, the partner usually bills separately. With a support desk, there is no extra service to buy, but your team does more of the work. Ask for the full cost of reaching the report, not only the platform price.
